An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of your heart. A small handheld device placed on your chest uses sound waves to create moving images of your heart, showing how it’s built and how well it’s working.
What it can show
An echocardiogram can show how well your heart pumps blood, as well as the size of your heart chambers and the thickness of your heart walls. It also lets your provider see how your heart valves are working and check for fluid around the heart or other structural concerns.

Your provider might recommend an echocardiogram if you have symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, or swelling in your legs or ankles. It may also be ordered if you have a heart murmur or an irregular heartbeat, or if you have high blood pressure or another condition that can affect the heart. For people with a known heart condition, an echocardiogram is a helpful way to monitor changes over time
What to expect
The test usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. You’ll lie on an exam table while a technician applies a small amount of gel and moves the device across your chest. There are no needles and no downtime, and you can go about your day afterward. Wear comfortable clothing. In most cases no special preparation is needed.
