Liver Elastography
FibroScan is a quick, non-invasive test that checks the health of your liver. It measures liver stiffness, which can be a sign of scarring (fibrosis), and the amount of fat in the liver, all without a biopsy.
What it can show
Liver elastography can show whether your liver has scarring and, if so, how much. It can also detect whether fat has built up in your liver, a condition known as fatty liver disease. Over time, it helps your provider see how your liver is responding to treatment or lifestyle changes.
Why your provider might recommend it
Your provider might recommend liver elastography if you have fatty liver disease or risk factors for it, such as diabetes, obesity, or high cholesterol. It may also be ordered if you have hepatitis B or hepatitis C, alcohol-related liver concerns, or abnormal liver blood tests. For people with a known liver condition, liver elastography is a helpful way to monitor changes over time.
Preparation Instruction and Consent Form
Before your liver elastography scan, please avoid eating or drinking anything except a small amount of water for 4 hours beforehand. If you have diabetes, ask for an earlier appointment. You may take your usual medications with a small sip of water. Wear loose, two-piece clothing so the right side of your abdomen is easy to reach, and please avoid dresses or jumpsuits. Plan to arrive 15 minutes early, and bring your insurance card and a photo ID. Be sure to let your care team know if you are pregnant or have an implanted device such as a pacemaker or nerve stimulator.
What to expect
The test takes about 10 to 15 minutes. You’ll lie on your back while a technician places a handheld probe on the skin over your liver, just below the ribs on your right side. You’ll feel a gentle tap or vibration, but it isn’t painful. You may be asked not to eat for a few hours beforehand, so follow the instructions you’re given when you schedule.
