Echocardiograph
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of your heart. A small handheld device placed on your chest uses sound waves to create moving images of your heart, showing how it’s built and how well it’s working.
- What it can show
- How well your heart pumps blood
- The size of your heart chambers and the thickness of the heart walls
- How your heart valves are working
- Fluid around the heart or other structural concerns
- Why your provider might recommend it
- Shortness of breath, chest pain, or swelling in the legs or ankles
- A heart murmur or irregular heartbeat
- High blood pressure or other conditions that can affect the heart
- Monitoring a known heart condition over time
What to expect
The test usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. You’ll lie on an exam table while a technician applies a small amount of gel and moves the device across your chest. There are no needles and no downtime, and you can go about your day afterward. Wear comfortable clothing. In most cases no special preparation is needed.
Liver Elastography (FibroScan)
FibroScan is a quick, non-invasive test that checks the health of your liver. It measures liver stiffness, which can be a sign of scarring (fibrosis), and the amount of fat in the liver, all without a biopsy.
What it can show
- Whether your liver has scarring, and how much
- Whether fat has built up in your liver (fatty liver disease)
- How your liver is responding to treatment or lifestyle changes over time
Why your provider might recommend it
- Fatty liver disease or risk factors such as diabetes, obesity, or high cholesterol
- Hepatitis B or hepatitis C
- Alcohol-related liver concerns
- Abnormal liver blood tests
- Ongoing monitoring of a known liver condition
What to expect
The test takes about 10 to 15 minutes. You’ll lie on your back while a technician places a handheld probe on the skin over your liver, just below the ribs on your right side. You’ll feel a gentle tap or vibration, but it isn’t painful. You may be asked not to eat for a few hours beforehand, so follow the instructions you’re given when you schedule.
